Our Journey back to Texas!
Day 1: Vero Beach to Pensacola (8.5 hours without stops)
Getting home required some navigating avoiding the Tolls again so we decided to take a different way back home and planned a stop in Jacksonville, Florida. This was the cutest historic beach town! We stopped at the Beaches Museum which is free to visit. We were able to learn about the town's history as well as visit the cutest Sunrise Surf Shop.
Then we stopped at Alfred B. Maclay Gardens in Tallahassee for dinner which was a fantastic stop! We would love to come back in the Spring when the azaleas are blooming. Keep in mind that the cost to enter the park is $6 per car but during the months of January-April Adults cost an additional $6 and $3 for children when the gardens are in Full Bloom.
Day 2: Pensacola to Houston (9 hours without stops)
We planned our trip around the Blue Angels Training Dates so that we would be able to stop on the way back home. The US Naval Museum was a huge hit and the entire experience is Free! If you're looking to catch a Blue Angel Practice, be sure to check the schedule here. You are able to bring your own chairs or picnic blanket to view the show or you can rent chairs there for $6. The museum itself was also a very engaging and interactive experience for the kids. We could have definitely spent more time here if we weren't trying to get back on the road.
We also planned to stop at the USS Alabama on our way home. Adults are $18, Kids are $6 and Children under 5 are Free. This was a great break from the car and it had a lot of opportunity for exploring and learning. Part of the museum is outdoors so I do recommend planning to visit during a cooler time of year.
